Foster parents often ask about their role in regards to school. Note that foster parents are responsible for ensuring that their child(ren) are doing well in school.

It may be very difficult for the child to concentrate and to excel in school, given the trauma they have experienced, but through the care and support received from foster parents, many children are successful in school.

Please keep the following:

  1. Report Cards
  2. IEP forms (for children in special education)
  3. Any awards or certificates
  4. Concerns about attendance

HOMEWORK

It is recommended that you establish a place for the child to do homework where you can supervise that homework is actually being completed.  We also recommend that you establish a homework hour.

If the child states that there is no homework that day, have the child read or review math problems. This seems to remove the incentive for lying about homework, as the child has to remain for the homework hour anyway.
