Psychotropic medications are medications that are intended to help control behavior or to restore emotional balance. These medications have additional requirements and documentation.
- THERE MUST BE A COURT ORDER AUTHORIZING PSYCHOTROPIC MEDICATIONS PRIOR TO THE MEDICATION BEING ADMINISTERED. If your doctor wants to prescribe any psychotropic medication, contact your family social worker immediately so the family social worker can work with the doctor to obtain the necessary court authorization.
- The court order will specify a dosage range. If the doctor wants to increase the dosage over the authorized range, that also requires a court order prior to the administration of the increased dosage.
- Note in the child’s file any positive or negative changes you observe relating to the child’s medications.
